Kaaterskill High Peak, officially High Peak, rises 3,655 feet in Hunter, New York, between Platte Clove and Kaaterskill Clove. Long mistaken for the Catskills' highest mountain because of its striking position on the escarpment, it was later shown to rank 23rd, though it remains one of the range's most prominent and recognizable peaks. Peter DeLaBigarre made the first recorded ascent of any Catskill High Peak here on July 26, 1793. In the 19th century, artists including Thomas Cole helped make it an emblem of the Catskills. Now part of the Forest Preserve, it is valued for its views, unofficial summit path, and surviving first-growth forest.
