Fort Lee Historic Park occupies the Hudson Palisades bluff known as Mount Constitution in Fort Lee, New Jersey, where a major Continental Army position was established in 1776 to help control the Hudson River opposite Fort Washington. Ordered by George Washington and later renamed for General Charles Lee, the fort worked with Fort Washington and chevaux-de-frise to hinder British warships. The site became central to the campaign around the Battle of Fort Lee, with the nearby ferry serving as a vital supply link and intelligence route. After Fort Washington fell, British and Hessian forces advanced here, forcing Washington’s evacuation on November 20, 1776, and the retreat across New Jersey.
