Built around 1860, this ranch house was home to descendants of the Bernal family for 120 years. Rufina Bernal, granddaughter of Rancho Santa Teresa founder Jose Joaquin Bernal, and Carlos Gulnac married and raised their family here. Their daughter Susan married Patrick F. Joice in 1894, and the Joice family continued to operate its cattle business at this ranch until 1980. Originally built with four rooms and no electricity or indoor plumbing, the house was added to and remodeled many times to accommodate growing families and advances in technology. By 1950, it was three times its original size and had power and water. It appears today as it looked in the early 1900s, when a ten-year-old on the ranch might beat rugs and sweep floors, carry wood for the wood stove, haul water from the spring for baths, dishwashing, and laundry, wash dishes by hand in a tub, and empty chamber pots.
