West Point Light, an active lighthouse on Seattle’s West Point at the northern edge of Elliott Bay, began operation on November 15, 1881 as Puget Sound’s first manned light station. Built at a cost of $25,000 and originally equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, it used kerosene for its first 44 years before joining Seattle’s electrical grid in 1926. It was automated in 1985, the last light station in Washington to be so converted. Transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to Seattle Parks in 2004, it was restored beginning in 2009 and remains a defining landmark of Discovery Park.
