Camp Trousdale, formerly served by Richland Station on the L&N Railroad, was an early staging and training area for Tennessee Confederate units. Regiments trained there included the 7th Infantry under Hatton, 16th Infantry under Savage, 18th Infantry under Palmer, 20th Infantry under Battle, 32nd Infantry under Bushrod Johnson, 41st Infantry under Tillman, and 44th Infantry under McDaniel. The 1st Cavalry Battalion under McNairy and 2nd Cavalry Battalion under Samuel Jones also trained there after organizing at Nashville and Mt. Pleasant, respectively, and in May, 1862 these battalions became the 1st Cavalry under Biffle.
