Our Lady's Mantle
Faith
In the Middle Ages this flower was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was called Our Lady's mantle because the lobes of the leaves resemble the scalloped edges of a woman's shawl, cloak or mantle. The dew drops that collected on the leaves of the plant were considered holy water, which would cleanse a person of all illness. In Italy it is known as Madonna Mantello, or the Madonna's cloak.
