George Landis Arboretum near Esperance, New York, grew from Oak Nose Farm, bought by Herman Franklin Lape in 1903 and transformed by his son Frederick Lape after 1928. A writer and patron of artists, Frederick Lape later used a bequest from his friend George Edwin Landis to create the arboretum and name it in his honor. With guidance from botanists, he assembled an important living collection that now includes about 2,000 labeled specimens, notable native New York plantings, and an especially strong fir collection. Expanded to 548 acres, it also serves as a scenic park, educational center, and public garden.
