The Watts Museum on West Virginia University’s Evansdale campus in Morgantown preserves the social, cultural, and technological history of West Virginia’s coal, oil, and gas industries. Its collections began before the School of Mines was established in 1930, first centering on flame safety lamps and later expanding into thousands of artifacts, documents, photographs, models, minerals, petroleum samples, and miners’ personal effects. Officially established in 1991 and renamed in 2005 for Royce J. Watts and Caroline B. Watts, it has presented exhibitions on oil production, mine rescue, mine lighting, engineering, and coal camp life, linking industrial development with the communities it shaped.
