Lipscomb County was formed from Young and Bexar Territories on August 21, 1876, and organized on June 6, 1887. It was named in honor of Abner S. Lipscomb, 1789-1856, who served as Secretary of State in President Lamar's cabinet, was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1845, and was an associate justice of the first Supreme Court of Texas. Lipscomb is the county seat.
