For centuries this area served Indian tribes as a hunting ground amid vast swamp forests of elm, ash, beech, pin oak, and maple. To the east, a large cranberry bog lay under water most of the year, and Indian hunting camps on the headwaters of Sycamore Creek saw plentiful harvests of both game and cranberries. These wetlands continued to produce abundant game after most sections of the county were settled and farmed. Today, extensive drainage has transformed the area into productive farmland.
