Clifton Methodist Church stood on a hill across Hwy. 12 on Neptune Rd. from 1888 until lightning struck it on 5/16/1984 and it burned to the ground, and a grove of trees now marks the historic site. The church was named for Edwin Clifton, who first built a meeting house on 1 plus A. of his land opposite a spring near Half Pone Creek and deeded it in 1825 to church trustees Mark Chambliss, Jos. Stroud, Robt. Williams, Philip Duke, Thos. Bell, his son Wm. Clifton, and Wm. Stewart, with Jas. Pool and Lemi. Clifton, Edwin's brother, as witnesses. In 1803 Edwin and Nancy had given a M.H. on their Halifax Co., NC land to the Methodist Conference. Many Methodists from Halifax Co., NC, likely guided by hope, moved to Montgomery Co., TN from 1808-1820, and family names listed near Weavers Chapel Methodist Church by Littleton and Lake Gaston also appear both in North Carolina deed books concerning Edwin Clifton's fellow trustees and in the 1820 Montgomery Co. census: Atkins, Bell, Dawson, Faulk, Mallory, Nicholson, Sledge, Vaughn, and Wilson.
