Potter County, South Dakota, honors Civil War veterans who settled the county and links its heritage to the wider meaning of the war. The county was first named Ashmore, then renamed Potter by the 1877 Dakota Territory Legislature. Gettysburg was first named Meade in honor of General Meade, then renamed Gettysburg to memorialize the Pennsylvania town where the battle often considered the turning point of the Civil War was fought on July 1st to 4th, 1863. President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, followed by his 2nd inaugural address, gave the name Gettysburg great historical significance and made it known by all. The memorial also honors and supports in perpetuity all who have served, are serving, or will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and all its branches, memorializes the sacrifices of veterans, seeks to educate the public, develop visitation, and foster patriotism in the community. It further preserves the names of the Potter County Civil War veterans and honors the heritage, patriotism, and service of the community and county.
