Muscle Beach refers to two closely linked outdoor exercise sites on the Los Angeles coast: the original in Santa Monica and the later weightlifting platform in Venice. The tradition began in 1934 as part of a Works Progress Administration project that placed exercise equipment on the sand south of the Santa Monica Pier, supporting gymnastics, acrobatics, and early bodybuilding. By the 1950s, the Santa Monica site had gained worldwide fame and helped broaden acceptance of both acrobatics and bodybuilding. Venice later carried forward the barbell tradition, while Santa Monica remained focused on gymnastics, together forming a living link between Depression-era recreation and modern fitness culture.
