Two of the seven War Between the States generals buried in West Virginia are interred here: Albert Gallatin Jenkins of the C.S.A. in the Confederate plot and John Hunt Oley of the Union, along with over 200 soldiers. The Confederate Monument was dedicated in 1900. Spring Hill Cemetery is a 110 acre cemetery where many area founding families are buried, and it includes plots for Confederate, Union, and Pallotine Sisters, veterans' sections, and a monument honoring the Marshall University football team and fans killed in a 1970 plane crash.
