Frazier Mountain, called Toshololo in the Samala language, is a broad pine-forested summit in Southern California’s Transverse Ranges, rising 8,017 feet in Los Padres National Forest near the meeting point of Ventura, Los Angeles, and Kern counties. Its modern name derives from miner William T. Frazer, active here in the 1850s, though the spelling later changed. For the Chumash, Toshololo means “mountain of the east,” reflecting its location east of Mount Pinos and its ties to the morning star and spring equinox. Sacred in Chumash history and culture, it also remains a prominent regional peak valued for its scenery, lookout site, and proximity to important fault-country landscapes.
