Fox Lake Wildlife Area is a 421-acre Ohio state wildlife area in southeastern Waterloo Township, Athens County, near New Marshfield. Centered on 48-acre Fox Lake along Margaret Creek, which flows to the Hocking River, the area began with a lake impounded for flood control. Its significance lies in the combination of open water and unusual geology: sandstone bluffs line both sides of the lake, while limestone within and beneath them supports limestone-loving plants such as chinkapin oak and Shumard oak. Distinctive rounded limestone indentations known locally as cradle in the rock add to the character of this state-managed wildlife refuge and recreation area.
