San Bruno Mountain Ecological Reserve is an 83-acre protected area on the mountain’s north slope about 8 miles south of San Francisco, next to San Bruno Mountain State Park. Managed by the California Department of Fish and Game, it preserves habitat, wildlife, open space, and a relatively undisturbed part of the mountain. The reserve was established in 1989 after the state Wildlife Conservation Board bought the land with Proposition 70 funds authorized by the California Wildlife, Coastal and Park Land Conservation Bond Act approved by voters in 1988. Its protected landscape includes pristine Buckeye Canyon and parts of Owl Canyon.
