Dedicated on July 20, 1976, this memorial honors the men, women, and children of Brevard County who, through the practice of the American way of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, gave sacrificially of their time and money in commemorating the Bicentennial of the United States of America; their names were inscribed upon parchment and placed beneath the monument, and those associated with the effort included members of the Port Authority, seven original astronauts, and the Brevard Bicentennial Committee.
