Garden Island Indian Cemetery is an Ojibwe burial ground and archaeological site on Garden Island in Lake Michigan, in northern Michigan. With about 3,500 graves, it has been described as the largest Indian cemetery in the United States. Most burials date from 1851 to 1935, though the oldest graves are unmarked. Surviving markers include spirit houses and headstones, reflecting changing burial traditions over time. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the cemetery is significant both for its scale and as a long-used Ojibwe cultural and historic place on Garden Island.
