General Samuel Dale was praised by Andrew Jackson as a man no one this side of hell could stop and as one who had been true to his country. Dale declared that his trust had been in God and that the greater the peril, the firmer his faith. A Choctaw warrior honored him as Big Sam, saying that though he slept here, his spirit was a chieftan and a brave in the hunting ground.
