On August 30, 1862, with temperatures between 96 and 100 degrees and Kentucky in drought, a dusty, thirsty Confederate line moved north through the hamlet then known as Rogersville, near the intersection of the Old State Road and the Berea Road. Around 11AM, after an hour or so since fighting at Mt. Zion Church, the Confederate army began moving north toward Rogersville, having rested, regrouped, and replenished ammunition, while the second Union line stood about a mile to the north. Just south of this point, the Confederates formed their line and advanced through cornfields and wheat stubble as Union artillery on the high ground between Rogersville and Duncannon Road fired on the men in butternut and gray. Having had little water since leaving Bobtown before daylight, the army marched past this house and stopped in the woods just south of the Union army, setting the stage for the second phase of the Battle of Richmond, while men searched desperately for scarce water in wells, cattle ponds, and pools in dry creek beds.
