Lac qui Parle Mission was established in 1835, where Christian missionaries founded one of the earliest churches and schools in Minnesota. A chapel was built with the help of Dakota people in 1841, and the foundations of other buildings remain there. Along the Minnesota River, the site of Fort Renville marks a major fur post in the 1820s and 1830s.
