In 1857, Nathaniel Jackson came from Alabama and established a ranch in this area with his wife Matilda Hicks, their children, and his freed slaves. A former slave owner who was white, Jackson's wife was black. On his 5,500-acre ranch, he raised livestock and grew vegetables, cotton, and sugarcane, and he established a chapel that served family and friends. Known for generosity and hospitality, he provided lodging and other resources to many people in need, including runaway slaves. After his death in 1865, his heirs divided the property, and the share given to his son Eli included the family cemetery at this site. Eli Jackson, his wife Elizabeth Kerr, and their children continued the family's tradition of hospitality. Eli served as a county official, as did his son Nathaniel "Polo" Jackson. Polo's daughter Adela operated the ranch and cared for the cemetery until her death in 1992. The cemetery represents the early ranching communities of the area and remains a link to the Jackson family and to the friends and neighbors buried there.
