Tri-State Mining District Rock Drill
Industry
1
A steam powered rock drill was an integral tool of the Tri-State Mining District, where accessing ore required drilling into tough limestone, chert, and dolomite walls. Drill bits punctured holes in the walls so explosives could be inserted. The blasts broke the rock, lead, and zinc into smaller chunks that could then be scooped up and placed in ore buckets.
