Beneath the waters of Lake Erie’s Eastern Basin lies a graveyard of shipwrecks from two centuries, the result of surprise storms, uncharted shallows, and a lack of navigation aids. The wrecks include the tug Wilma, the wood propeller Swallow, the wood schooner barge Abyssinia, the sidewheel steamer Atlantic, the scow Cracker, the bark Trade Wind, the schooner St. James, the wood propeller Persian, the barquentine C.B. Benson, the iron propeller Brunswick, the three-masted schooner Carlingford, the propeller package freighter Passaic, the schooner Washington Irving, and the three-masted schooner Annabell Wilson. Recorded losses span from 1852 to 1936 and include sinkings caused by storms, collisions, fire, running aground, ice, and causes unknown. Annabell Wilson was lost in a storm on July 12, 1913, while carrying coal, and now lies in fifty feet of water one-half mile off Dunkirk Harbor.
