About 3,800 years ago, people made a small Late Archaic campsite along the Iowa River at what is now Coralville, Iowa. Excavation revealed a modest encampment focused on two hearths, with separate areas for animal processing, stone tool production, and refuse, plus a deep feature of unknown purpose. Stone tools suggest the occupants had traveled downriver from north-central Iowa and were doing late-stage tool making and maintenance during a short stay. Plant remains place the occupation in the warmer part of the year, probably late in the season, and show use of little barley and barnyard grass, evidence of early adaptation to domesticated plants.
