William F. Cody, known as Buffalo Bill, was born near LeClaire, Iowa, in 1846 and became a legend of the early West. Remembered as an Indian scout, buffalo hunter, Pony Express rider, Indian fighter, and showman, he was regarded as fearless, becoming a Pony Express rider at age 16 and fighting in several campaigns during Indian uprisings. At Scout's Rest Ranch near Omaha on May 17, 1883, he organized Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, which toured for many years in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The subject of hundreds of books and articles, he was at the height of his career by far the most famous man in the world and in fact America's first super star.
