On May 7, 1864, Colonel J.W. Sprague's brigade of Veatch's 4th Division, 16th Army Corps, after camping with the corps on the Little Chickamauga near Catlett, pushed forward in a surprise move and seized this gap in Taylor's Ridge at 9 p.m. This enabled Dodge and the 16th Army Corps of McPherson's Army of the Tennessee [US] to march east, unopposed, to Villanow and Snake Creek Gap on May 8. The 15th Corps of the same army crossed at Gordon Springs Gap northeast of here. McPherson's move to Snake Creek Gap outflanked the Confederate forces under General J.C. Johnston [CS] at Dalton, resulting later in the evacuation of that place and the two days of battle at Resaca.
