Seneca Caverns, a karst cave in Germany Valley near Riverton in Pendleton County, has long been part of eastern West Virginia’s cave tourism. Its early history is linked to Phillip Dieter, later known as Teter, who bought the surrounding land in the 1770s and may have been the first to enter while seeking water for livestock. The first recorded entry occurred in 1781, when the Rev. Francis Asbury went inside. The Teter family held the property until 1928; the Harman family then developed it and opened it to the public in 1930. Its best-known chamber, Teter Hall, is a notably large interior space.
