The Great War Monuments
Military
8
In the 1920s, veterans groups placed the American Legion Monument and the American War Mother’s Monument at this spot to honor those killed in World War I, whose violence, brutality, and carnage stunned the world. People called it “The Great War” and “The War to End Wars,” hoping there would never be another like it. The American War Mother’s Monument contains papers from 34 states bearing the names of their war dead. Placing the monuments in the cave protected them, displayed them to the cave’s many visitors, and preserved for the future a warning from the past about the horrors of war.
