The Stonewall riots began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, one of the few places where gay people could gather openly despite widespread policing, stigma, and harassment in the United States. What started as resistance to a routine raid became several nights of protest as anger spilled into the streets. The uprising involved many especially vulnerable people and became a major turning point in the modern LGBT rights movement. Within weeks, activists formed new organizations and publications, and the riots’ first anniversary helped inspire the pride parades now held worldwide.
