First organized in 1831 as the Methodist Episcopal Church, this congregation was shaped by the denomination’s 1844 split into two groups over slavery. The first Methodist Episcopal church in Clinton was built in 1850, and by 1883 the Clinton congregation had divided into two branches: the Methodist Episcopal congregation, now St. Mark, and the Methodist Episcopal Church South, now Memorial. The first church building, erected in 1850 at the corner of Church and Cullom Streets, was used until 1887. A second building was constructed in 1887 at the present location and named Young Memorial in honor of benefactor Judge D.K. Young. That building was torn down in 1927, and the current structure was built in 1929. An educational wing was added in 1961, and Memorial Chapel was built in 1963 in honor of A. D. Crenshaw by his family. In 1968, the church became known as Memorial United Methodist Church.
