Kirkwood Observatory in Bloomington, Indiana, has been part of Indiana University astronomy for more than a century. Named for astronomer and mathematics professor Daniel Kirkwood, whose work identified the asteroid belt's Kirkwood Gaps, it was built in 1900 and dedicated on May 15, 1901. Its chief historic instrument is the original refracting telescope, made by Warner and Swasey Company and equipped with a 12-inch Brashear objective lens. Although it no longer serves as a research facility, the observatory remains active for teaching and public programs. A renovation in 2001–02 restored the building and telescope, which now support outreach, undergraduate instruction, and solar observing.
