Established in 1869 on the reservation of Sac and Fox Indians who were moved here from Kansas, the Sac and Fox Agency served a tribe whose reservation land was later allotted to tribal members and whose surplus land was opened to White settlement in 1891. Noted members of the tribe include Chief Moses Keokuk, Dr. William Jones, anthropologist, and Jim Thorpe, an internationally known athlete.
