In 1763, a band of Shawnee Indians led by Chief Cornstalk massacred white families of Muddy Creek and the Clendenins near here, completing the destruction of the early settlements in the Greenbrier Valley. In this cemetery are buried pioneer settlers, including Ann (McSwain) Clendenin Rogers, the heroine of the Clendenin massacre by Shawnee Indians on July 13, 1763, and of the siege of Fort Donnally in 1778 by over 200 Indians.
