On Sept. 24, 1898, Barney Toufel bought the lot where John Askew's brick blacksmith shop stood, tore the shop down, and built the Well Block beside the public well, with a windmill just behind it on the southeast corner. From the mid 1920's until 1952, Vernon Wolfe operated a service gang gas station and Chevrolet dealership there called Wolfe Sales & Service Garage & Gas Station, which sold Red Crown gasoline. In April 1952, Art Gary bought the dealership and renamed it Gary Chevrolet Co., which remained in business into the 1960's. A ramp at the rear of the building was built to store five new cars on the second floor.
