The Carnegie Library of Valdosta, built in 1913 and opened in 1914 at 305 West Central Avenue, joined the city’s early civic development with later efforts to preserve local history. Funded in part by a $15,000 Andrew Carnegie grant within a $40,000 project, it was the first building designed by local architect Lloyd V. Greer. Originally part of the South Georgia Regional Library and later a branch library, it eventually became the home of the Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, it remains important as both a surviving Carnegie library and a center of community heritage.
