William Henry Haynes, Sr. donated land for Oakland Church and cemetery in 1811 to trustees James M. Montague, John P. Haynes, David Williamson, and William H. Haynes, Jr., though the deed was not recorded until 1859. The original structure is said to have been built of logs, the Presbyterian church was organized in 1834, and construction of the brick church began in 1845 using bricks made on the nearby Haynes plantation and carried to the site in saddlebags on horseback. Its architecture reflected a plain, sturdy Scotch-Irish style. Originally called “the church by the springs,” it served surrounding communities and denominations and became the mother church to congregations in Clifton Forge, Iron Gate, Rich Patch, and Low Moor. During the Civil War it served as a hospital for the sick and wounded, and twelve Confederate soldiers are buried in the graveyard. Regular services continued there, with changes in attendance and denominations, until December 23, 1963, and Low Moor Presbyterian Church now cares for the church and holds an annual homecoming celebration.
