August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles County, Missouri, is a 6,987-acre protected landscape of forests, grasslands, restored prairie, wetlands, cropland, streams, and dozens of lakes and ponds. Acquired from the U.S. government in 1947 with support from Alice Busch as a memorial to August Anheuser Busch Sr., it also carries a complex industrial past. Parts of the property were used in the 1940s for TNT and DNT production, and later, from 1958 to 1967, for disposal of rubble contaminated by uranium and radium. After decontamination as part of a Superfund site, it became a major place for habitat conservation, fishing, hunting, trails, and accessible outdoor recreation.
