One of the few remaining sections of the exterior portion of Atlanta's defenses stands in Adams Park as part of a barrier against Federal attempts to cut the two railroads entering the city from the southwest. Built about August 1, 1864, this line joined the main city fortifications at W. Fair and Ashby Sts., then ran southwest to East Point, and was later prolonged to Thames' Mill in Clayton County. Manned by troops of Hardee's and S. D. Lee's corps, it withstood all attempts to seize it and was abandoned only after the Federals cut the railroads at Fairburn and Jonesboro.
