Sacred Heart Catholic Church is the official shrine to St. Philippine Duchesne, the only person to have set foot in Kansas Territory who had been canonized to sainthood as of 2010. The church was built by the Diocese in 1941-1942, and 1941 was the year St. Philippine Duchesne was declared Blessed by the Vatican. The church was named after the order of teaching nuns to which she belonged, the Sisters for Sacred Heart. She was canonized in 1988. About 13 miles northwest is the St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial and Historical Park.
