Poplar Hill Mansion in Salisbury, Maryland, began in 1795 as Major Levin Handy’s Federal-style country estate, but financial and medical troubles left it unfinished until Dr. John D. Huston bought it in 1805 and continued the work. Over time, the estate passed through several owners, including Sarah Huston, who sold off land as the larger property was gradually broken up, and later George Waller, whose family lived there until 1945. Known for its tall proportions, gable-fronted facade, sash and Palladian windows, and fine neoclassical woodwork, the house also carries a local legend from the Huston period. It is now a public museum and a listed historic place.
