Calaveras Dome is a granite dome in Northern California that became a notable rock climbing destination despite its remote location. Climbing took place there from the 1950s onward, then grew again in the 1970s and 1980s as dedicated climbers opened new routes on the dome. Jay Smith, Jeff Altenburg, Paul Crawford, and Bob Pinkney were among those connected with this period of renewed development. Although it became an established destination, the area remained notably uncrowded. Calaveras Dome now attracts climbers from around the world for its rock, relative solitude, and natural beauty.
