Established in 1873 as Saint Jo’s first permanent town-square building, Stonewall Saloon embodied the cattle-drive era of the Old West. Built by Irb. H. Boggess and first operated as Boggess and Fulton, with a boarding house upstairs, it became a key rest stop for cowboys driving Longhorn herds north and was regarded as the last stop before the Red River crossing into Indian Territory. After local prohibition ended its drinking trade and the business closed in 1899, the building served as a restaurant, then Citizens National Bank, and later offices. Restored as a museum in 1958, it has since undergone renewed preservation and renovation.
