The Rusk Footbridge was first built in 1861 to allow residents east of the valley to reach town during rainy seasons. It was rebuilt in 1889 by T.H. Barnes, the engineer building New Birmingham, now a ghost town to the east. The city of Rusk maintained the footbridge until 1950, and it was restored in 1969 on plans by Barnes.
