On August 18, 1813, the Battle of the Medina was fought here when a Spanish Royalist army commanded by General José Joaquín Arredondo defeated with terrific slaughter the Republican Army of the North, composed of Anglo-American, Mexicans, and Indians and commanded by José Alvarez de Toledo, thus ending an attempt to free Texas and Mexico from Spanish rule.
