Originally called Destrehan Canal, it was dug before 1845 to connect the Mississippi River to Bayou Barataria. A "Submarine Railway" lifted boats over the levee until locks were successfully completed in 1907. It became part of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in 1924.
