Butano State Park is a 4,728-acre California state park near Pescadero in San Mateo County that has protected a secluded redwood canyon along Little Butano Creek since 1956. Known for its forested creek canyon, the park has about 40 miles of trails and supports camping through drive-in, walk-in, and backpacking sites. Campground and day-use areas provide restrooms and drinking water, while the backpacking site has no water, though seasonal streams are nearby. In summer, guided nature walks and weekend campfire programs are offered. The name Butano has long been used for the surrounding landscape and was recorded as early as 1816, with meanings tied to a horn drinking cup or possibly a Native American “meeting place.”
