Anthony Wayne's army consisted of four sub-legions totaling nearly 2500 men and about 1200 mounted Kentucky militia led by General Charles Scott, with General James Wilkinson serving as Wayne's second in command. Because Fort Defiance was a small enclosure, additional fortifications called redoubts were built, and three of the four sub-legions were deployed in them while Wayne's command was stationed near the garrison. Wilkinson's redoubt stood on the north side of the Maumee about a mile west of the point, with other redoubts placed east along the river near Blue Jacket's village and south on the Auglaize east bank near Buckongahelas' and Big Cat's village. The Kentucky militia was deployed to the west along the north slope of Coe's Run, the narrowest strip of land between the rivers, where Wayne ordered an abatis of treetops with sharpened branches pointing outward. Wayne remained in the area for about six weeks from August 8 through September 15, 1794.
