During 1917-1918, men from Nash County entered the service of their country in the great World War, and this account honors those who served and remembers the men from the county who gave their lives in that cause. The dead listed from the county are White William D. Adams, William Arthur Baker, Charles T. Barnes, John Manning Battle, Dudley Brantley, William L. Braswell, Claude Gray Champion, William Richard Coleman, William Clarence Culpepper, Parrott Daniel, James B. Deans, William Callie Denson, Ollie Driver, Noah M. Eatman, John R. Ezzell, William A. Jordan, George W. Lancaster, Howard Layton, Kearney Davis Matthews, Roscoe D. Matthews, James C. Moses, Edward Clinton Pitt, Homer S. Proctor, Fred Shipp, William Gray Sills, Harry Macon Swanson, James B. Vester, Robert Lee Wheeless, John Norman Wilder, and Rufus Williams, and Colored Jack Allen, Herman Baker, Lewis Battle, Wade Bryant, Henry Ellis, Joseph Grant, James Higgins, Louis Joyner, Blake Richardson, Jack Thomas, and Henry Thorp. These were the men whose lives were lost in the various branches of service, and a roster in the archives of this building records the name and service record of each person from the county who participated in the war. The inscription closes with Woodrow Wilson's words, "The right is more precious than peace."
